Tunes & Craic Classes

Killarney School of Music is delighted to introduce Tunes & Craic class. Developing live performance skills for a session environment. Where musicians with various instruments come together to learn session standards in a relaxed environment and pace with the intention of playing to public audiences.

In this class the students will learn all aspects of session playing. This will include good tuning, timing, playing with others, putting tunes together, audience interaction and accompaniment. Each group will prepare session style material and live performances will be included in the course.

Background

The idea for this course stems from the core of interaction that should accompany traditional Irish music. Taking the person learning the music out of the isolation of playing for themselves at home & bringing them together to create a fun environment for the music.

Students who participated in this class have not only gained a new set of musical, social and creative skills, but they have also all gained tremendous personal self-confidence, satisfaction and competence from the experience. Members are encouraged to form their own groups and find their own performance opportunities.

Designed to bring intermediate musicians together to play music together in  preparation for real world session playing. Classes are light-hearted & enjoyable manner. Building a session repertoire using standard session sets including slow and more up-tempo tune styles.

There are strong social elements and supportive elements to this class. Benefits include confidence building, musicianship & comradery.

Basic Information

Class Duration: 1 Hour Weekly

Number of Student in Group: Max of 15 students in each group

Pre-requisites: Tunes & Craic is open to both Killarney School of Music students and external students (not currently attending Killarney School of Music). Only suitable students are admitted to Tunes & Craic Classes (not suitable for absolute beginners).  The teacher has the final say and may have to arrange auditions.

Instruments/Disciplines Accepted in Tunes & Craic Class: All traditional Irish instruments will be accepted including accompaniment instruments.

What Will The Student Learn?

The student will learn all aspects of session playing for a live audience. This will include good tuning, timing, playing with others, putting tunes together, audience interaction and accompaniment.
